Charles Bessey had only been in the state a few years before he began extolling the Western Sand Cherry:
Two years later, America's foremost horticulturist, Liberty Hyde Bailey, first described and named Prunus besseyi for
the scientific record in "The Native Dwarf Cherries," Cornell University Experiment Station Bulletin 70:
Bessey continued to promote the Western Sand Cherry for years to come.
