TOUR INFORMATION: Winter is a great time to discover the world of evergreen conifers in Maxwell Arboretum. (Remember, we have 3 species of deciduous conifers. See: https://unlgardens.unl.edu/conifersdeciduous).There are eight different genera in the arboretum, with 36 species including 16 species and varieties. There are 3 maps, including two for the "Holdrege Frontage" area, the long skinny strip between Holdrege Street and the East Campus Loop, i.e. south across the road from the main part of the arboretum you probably usually visit. Some very cool trees there! The plant list serves as a key to the maps; the color-coding differentiates the genera and is a great way to teach kids the basics of conifer ID (this is a pine, this is a spruce, etc.). For adults, each tree is numbered providing a complete taxonomic identification. So, get outside for a great and safe adventure this winter, on your own or with family and friends. Kids driving you crazy at home? Here's a solution!
